Adopting an RV lifestyle can be exciting and mind-blowing. The joy of being on the go and creating beautiful memories keeps your head up. But, what if your comfort is compromised? You do not have to spend on luxury, but a minimum requirement is equipping yourself with a comfortable RV mattress.

But, how do you select a suitable mattress? What should be your guiding factors? RV mattresses are different from the usual ones, and it’s important to point out the features.

Best RV mattresses in the US

Here are critical pointers to helping you find the best RV mattress for your camper!

Buyer’s Guide

Does Size Matters?

RV mattresses come in several sizes depending on the type of bed you have. If you want to know which size mattress fits your bed, you take measurements of the inside of your bed and not the mattress.

The most common bed size for RV’s is the Short Queen (nicknamed Queen Short) and this usually measures either 60″x75″ or 60″x74″.

The  most common sizes are as follows :

  • RV Bunk:  34″ wide x 75″ long , 28″ x 75″, 30″ x 75″, 30″ x 80″, 34″ x 75″, 35″ x 79″ or 42″ x 80″
  • RV Twin: 38″ x 75″ or 38″ x 80
  • RV Full/RV Double: 53″ x 75″
  • RV King/Short King: 72″ x 75″ or 72″ x 80″
  • RV Queen/Short Queen: 60″ x 75″ (most common short queen size) or 60″ x 74″

There are many other sizes available, but these are the popular.

The depth can range from 3” to 9” but depends on the style. The most common RV mattresses are in the shape of a rectangle. Ultimately, your choice of mattress depends on the size and shape of your motorhome and personal preference.

RV Queen mattresses vs. regular Queen Mattresses

  • They are 5” to 6″ shorter than your typical residential queen mattresses. For example, a regular queen mattress measures 60″x80″. An RV short queen mattress measures 60″x75″.
  • With that being said, you will get away with using a 60″x80″ standard residential queen for most pop-up campers and truck campers. Just make sure you have no height limitations
  • Some RVs utilize curved bed frames to allow easy access to other facilities like bathrooms. Therefore, the mattresses have to be customized to fit the frame. Because of this, motor-home mattresses can be a little costlier.

Material Type

Some of the RV mattress types include memory foam, air mattresses, and spring mattresses.

RV Foam Mattresses

Foam RV mattresses last longer but dense ones are less breathable than lighter ones. One of the main complaints with foam is that these retain body temperature. However, some of them come with latex foam or gel memory foam to solve this issue. The density recommended for durability in a foam mattress is 1.8-2 lbs per cubic foot and 4 lbs for a memory foam mattress.  One of the main benefits of sleeping on a memory foam mattress is the reduction in motion transfer, alleviation in pain from pressure points and lower back and comfort.

Prices range between $150-$350 for a foam RV mattress and $399-$799 for a memory foam mattress.

RV Latex Mattresses

Latex  RV mattresses are a sound investment if you intend to spend a lot of time in your RV since these offer the most comfort.  Density is not an important feature with latex mattresses, the main question is if the latex is natural, synthetic, or a blend?  Natural being the preferred choice since it doesn’t break down as quickly and is naturally hypo-allergenic, dust-mite resistant, and anti-bacterial.

Be prepared to pay around $599-$999 for a quality RV latex mattress.

RV Air Mattresses

Air mattresses are on the higher end as well, are very comfortable but require extra care (air leakage) to maintain functionality. These are similar to standard blow-up bed but have a soft foam layer on top. If you’re travelling through high-altitude regions with you camper, you can experience deflated/burst air mattresses due to the fluctuation in altitude. You have to be very vigilant with this type of mattress and because of this, I wouldn’t recommend them.

Plus being on the higher end, prices range between $1100-2000. Ouch!

RV Spring or Coil Mattresses

On the other hand, spring or coil mattresses are durable with minimal maintenance. If you’re looking for that hotel luxury sleep in your RV a coil or spring mattress is the answer. As with all mattresses there are a few things to watch out for . Ensure your bed is well ventilated underneath as these can collect condensation and you’ll end up with some mold on the underside. To retain their support and comfort, flip them over now and again.

Temperature Control

An RV mattress should keep you cool and comfortable all night. Therefore, you should select ventilated ones to allow proper air flow. Alternatively, you can choose tough ones with ventilated toppers to control heat.

Custom RV Mattresses

Finally, for certain RVs (Jayco, Fleetwood, Airstream, Winnebago, Thor,Coachmen, Sunnybrook, Allegro Bay, Skyline, Northwood, Edge and Baja) because of the shape of the bed and of the vehicle, you may have no choice but to order a customized mattress which only takes about week in production. There are a number of online suppliers of customized RV mattresses such as Tochta, the 25 year-old mattress manufacturers that specialize in the RV and trucking mattress space. Prices are generally a little bit higher but not a whole lot than the higher end standard RV mattresses.
